Manual submission, one platform at a time
Each listing is filled in by hand to meet that platform's own requirements, from the most specific category to the right phone format.
StartupSubmit's team manually lists your business on relevant local, business and niche directories, with the same name, address and phone number everywhere. You send your details once. We research, submit, track and report.
The problem
Customers, directories and search engines read your business information from different places. When those places disagree, people call old numbers, drive to old addresses, or pick a competitor whose details look more reliable.
| Listing | Name | Phone | Address |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website | Harbourline Plumbing | +44 113 496 0000 | 14 Example St |
| Directory A | Harbourline Plumbing Ltd. | +44 113 496 0000 | 14 Example St |
| Directory B | Harbourline Plumbing | 0113 496 0999 | 3 Old Road |
| Directory C | Harbourline Plumbers Leeds | +44 113 496 0000 | 14 Example St |
What's included
The same manual approach we use for directory submissions, applied to local business listings. A person on our team works through each platform. Nothing is pushed out in bulk by software.
Each listing is filled in by hand to meet that platform's own requirements, from the most specific category to the right phone format.
Local, business and niche platforms shortlisted for your location and trade.
One master record used on every listing.
Name, address and phone written the same way everywhere we submit.
The most specific relevant category each platform offers.
Description, hours, logo, website and service areas where allowed.
Every submission logged: live, pending review, or waiting on owner verification.
One report of where you were listed and the status of each listing.
Deliverable
A completion report listing every platform we submitted to, with the status of each listing.
Your report is delivered as an Airtable report and includes every platform we submitted to, the submission status, a screenshot of each submission, and the login details for every account we created.
After submission, each directory decides when to publish. Some publish quickly, others review listings for days or weeks, and some confirm with the business owner by phone, email or post. Your report flags any submission that needs your action.
If we don't deliver the submissions in your plan, you get your money back.

The basics
A local citation is any online mention of a business's core details, usually its name, address and phone number (NAP), on a directory, business listing platform, map service, review site or local website.
Citations help customers find and contact a business. They also give search engines more places to confirm that a business exists, where it is and what it does. Most citations also include a website link, business category, description, opening hours and photos.
Citations fall into two groups. Structured citations sit in a fixed format on listing platforms. Unstructured citations appear inside ordinary content, such as a local news story or blog post that mentions the business. Citation building services mostly deal with structured citations, because those are the ones you can create and control.
Where a citation appears matters too. A local directory ties the business to a place. A niche or industry directory ties it to a type of work. A general business directory adds a broad, public record.
A listing with set fields on a directory or business platform.
A mention of the business within normal web content.
Name, Address, Phone. The three details every citation should state identically. Businesses that serve customers at their locations may hide the street address on some platforms.
A local citation service is a done-for-you service that creates business listings for you on relevant directories and platforms, using one consistent set of business details, and reports where each listing was submitted.
Instead of filling in dozens of forms yourself, a citation building service handles the full workflow:
Find platforms that fit the business's location and industry.
Check each platform is live, legitimate and accepts the business type.
Standardise the business data so every listing matches.
Complete each platform's form by its own rules.
Handle email confirmations; flag phone or postcard checks to the owner.
Record every submission and its status in one report.
Coverage
The exact mix depends on your country, city and industry. Every plan includes general business and local directories; Growth and Authority add industry, niche, regional and review platforms. Examples of the directory types we work with may include:
Volume alone isn't the goal. A plumber in Leeds gains more from trade and Yorkshire listings than from a hundred general directories in other countries. We prioritise relevance, then build out coverage.
NAP consistency
NAP consistency means your business name, address and phone number appear in exactly the same form on every listing, your website and your business profiles.
Your real business name, written the same way every time. No added keywords or locations that aren't part of the name.
One format for street, unit, city and postcode. Hidden where allowed if you serve customers at their location.
One main local number, formatted consistently, with the international code where the platform expects it.
We also keep these consistent wherever a platform asks for them: website URL, primary and secondary categories, business description, opening hours, service areas, logo and social profiles.
Customers trust details that agree. Directories and data platforms share information with each other, so an error in one place can spread. Search engines compare what different sources say about a business. Consistency won't guarantee rankings on its own, but inconsistent data works against you.
Approach
Both approaches exist for good reasons. Here is how they differ in practice.
| Area | Manual citation building (StartupSubmit) | Automated bulk submission |
|---|---|---|
| Research | Platforms chosen for your location and industry | Usually a fixed network of partner sites |
| Directory relevance | Checked per business | Same set for most customers |
| Data accuracy | A person checks each field before submitting | Depends on the data you enter at the start |
| Category selection | Most specific category on each platform | Mapped automatically from one category |
| Submission handling | Platform-specific forms, captchas and emails handled by hand | Limited to platforms that accept data feeds |
| Quality control | Reviewed before and after submission | Varies by provider |
| Tracking and reporting | Status of every listing in your report | Varies by provider; often a dashboard |
| Ongoing sync | One-time build; changes need a new update | Some tools update listings while subscribed |
Local SEO
Citations are one part of local SEO, alongside your Google Business Profile, website, reviews and links. Here is what they can contribute.
People search directories and review sites directly. A listing puts you where they already look.
Matching details across sources can help search engines trust which address and number are correct.
Regional and city listings reinforce where you operate. Industry listings reinforce what you do.
Where a platform includes a website link, it can add a referring domain. Many links are nofollow, and some platforms don't link at all.
Active directories can send visitors who are already comparing local options.
More legitimate places show your name, logo and details when people research you.
What we don't promise. Citation building does not guarantee Google Maps rankings, Local Pack placement, organic rankings, traffic or leads. Not every citation creates a backlink, and more citations do not always mean higher rankings. Results depend on your market, competition, reviews, website and Google Business Profile.
Search and AI
Google Search, Google's AI features and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity draw on public web information. An accurate, consistent presence across legitimate platforms gives these systems more information about who a business is and what it does.
No AI guarantees. We can't control whether any search engine or AI assistant mentions, recommends or cites a business. Consistent public information is a foundation, not a guarantee.
Who it's for
Any legitimate business that depends on being found locally. Eligibility varies by platform, so some directories won't accept every business type.
Your time
You can build citations yourself. This is what that involves, for every single platform.
Then repeat for every platform.
FAQ
Straight answers, including the things we can't promise.
Ask us a questionA local citation is an online mention of a business's name, address and phone number, usually on a directory, business listing platform, map service or review site. Most citations also include a website link, category and description.
Citation building is the process of creating accurate business listings on relevant directories and platforms, using the same business details on each one.
A local citation service researches suitable directories, prepares consistent business data, submits the listings, tracks their status and reports the results, so the business owner doesn't have to.
Citations help customers find and contact a business, and give search engines more sources to confirm a business's name, location and category. They are one part of local SEO, alongside a Google Business Profile, reviews and a good website.
NAP consistency means your business name, address and phone number appear in exactly the same form everywhere online. Mismatched details confuse customers and can make it harder for search engines to trust which details are correct.
There is no fixed number. It depends on your industry, location and competitors. A smaller set of relevant local and industry listings is usually more useful than a large number of unrelated directories.
Citations can support local SEO by reinforcing accurate business information and local relevance. They don't guarantee rankings, and their impact varies by market and competition.
Some do. Many platforms include a website link, often nofollow, and some include no link at all. Citation building is not a link-building service, so we don't promise a backlink from every listing.
Yes. Every listing is submitted by a person on the StartupSubmit team. We don't use bots or bulk submission software.
Your business name, address or service area, main phone number, website, category, services and a short description. A logo, opening hours and social profiles are helpful but optional.
We complete submissions within 5–7 days. Some platforms publish instantly, while others review listings for days or weeks, or require owner verification. Those timelines are set by each platform.
Yes. You receive a completion report showing every platform we submitted to and the status of each listing, including any that need your action.
That depends on each directory, so no provider can promise a number. Some publish quickly, others moderate listings or confirm details with the business owner first. We submit every citation in your plan and prove each one with a screenshot.
Yes. For service-area businesses we hide the street address where platforms allow it. For multiple locations, each location is built with its own details. Each location is a separate order.
We check each directory before submitting. If your business is already there, we skip it so you don't end up with a duplicate listing, and use another relevant directory where one is available.
Yes. Your report includes the login details for every directory account we create, so you can update or manage those listings yourself later.
We build citations for businesses in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, using directories that serve the business's own country and area.
Yes. Agencies and SEO consultants can order for client businesses. Ask for an unbranded report and you can share it with your client as your own.
Our plans are $79 for 50 citations, $109 for 100 and $259 for 300, paid once per business location. That works out at $0.86 to $1.58 per citation, depending on the plan.
Our plans build new citations. Correcting or removing existing listings isn't included by default, but tell us about them during onboarding and we'll say what we can do. Fixing or removing an existing listing usually requires access to the account that controls it, so it isn't always possible.
No. We don't guarantee Google Maps rankings, Local Pack placement, organic rankings, traffic or leads. Anyone who does is promising something they can't control.
Send your business details once. Our team builds your citations by hand and reports every submission.
